Kolumno, a bit of geometry for fun and complicated puzzles

We love indie video games, and we also love giving visibility to independent games that might not shine much on their own, so you can discover great games from different styles. In addition, as we are a Spanish media outlet, we love highlighting the best work from developers from our country, and today we have a game developed by Flynn's Arcade and published by Devilish Games: Kolumno.

Obviously, Kolumno has no story, since everything is based on its gameplay. In the game, we will go through 75 levels of 3D shapes where we have to throw a metal ball into a hole without it hitting anything. The truth is that it is a gameplay that seems very, very simple at first, but it becomes so challenging that even 4 powers appear, including the ability to shrink the ball, stop it, make it go at super speed, and break blocks.

We will have to be very, very smart to use these powers at the exact right second, and no, they will not be available in all levels, only in those that need them, which makes us think more carefully about what move to make before throwing the ball. It is a trial-and-error game, trying again and again, thinking of a plan each time we fail. The truth is that this makes it fun, although it can get tiring to repeat the same thing over and over again sometimes.

As for the graphics, the models are geometric pieces that perfectly allow gameplay on them, and they are very well designed so that the ball will never fail if you do it right, even if there are 50 pieces around. The designer has done a very good job, as all the gameplay across the 75 levels is based on these 75 pieces.

On the other hand, the soundtrack is without a doubt the best part of the game, and even though the game is not pure intensity, it will give you goosebumps thanks to its soundtrack.

In conclusion, Kolumno is not the GOTY of this year, not even close, as it is a game meant simply to pass the time solving puzzles and thinking. However, it is a game that does stimulate all your mental abilities when it comes to throwing that damn metal ball into the hole without hitting anything, and its design and soundtrack are quite good.

If you are even slightly interested in Sudoku or magazine-style puzzles and are going to spend those €2 on them, I would save them for this game, available on Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, and PC. However, we recommend the portable versions over the PC one, as it is a game that works very well for when you are out and about and want to play something that only lasts a few minutes and is not too intense.
